In 2017, Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi as well as Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it was the top-streamed track in just 6 months. Some reggaeton artists have criticized the shift to mainstream music in 2020. A new band, Rauw Alejandro, wanted to continue the growth and evolution of reggaeton. The incorporation of elements from electronic dance music and different styles was an accepted method.
